We’re heading into a jam-packed week of economic data, alongside the second-busiest earnings week of the season, highlighted by a delayed jobs report and several critical reads on inflation.
Monday is pretty quiet.
Tuesday brings December Retail Sales, delayed by last month’s government shutdown.
Expectations point to a solid holiday season, with spending strength from higher-income consumers offsetting continued pressure at the lower end.
Wednesday delivers the delayed January Nonfarm Payrolls report. Job growth is expected to rebound modestly to +70k, though consensus estimates have drifted lower following a string of softer labor data.
The Unemployment Rate is expected to hold at 4.4%, just below November’s five-year high of 4.5%. Average Hourly Earnings — the first major inflation input for January — are expected to slow to 3.6% YoY, the weakest pace since June 2021.
We’ll be watching Existing Home Sales on Thursday, along with weekly labor indicators including ADP payrolls and Jobless Claims.
The main event comes Friday with the Consumer Price Index. Both Headline and Core CPI are expected to cool to 2.5%, signaling renewed disinflation as easing shelter costs and lower gasoline prices offset modest upward pressure from tariffs and electricity rates. If so, I expect the market could rally.
